Oil on canvas painting by Belgian artist, Alex de Andreis (1880-1939) depicting a cavalier in red coat and white collar, looking to the left. The cavalier has a velvety red coat, so realistic that it feels you can touch the velvet, trimmed in gold and with a row of gold buttons down the center. His red cloak is topped with a white collar. The man has close cropped hair and a quite bushy mustache. He holds his cloak with his right gloved hand. He also has a broad-brimmed black hat. The painting is signed de Andreis in the lower left corner.

Alex de Andreis was known and most famous for his depiction of cavaliers, musketeers, and courtiers - all elegant gentlemen in fine dress clothing of the style of the 17th Century. Although his subjects are likely models, they are dressed in period costume of the 17th Century. The paintings of this type are from the early 1920’s, although most are undated. There is an envelope on the back of the painting that includes an original label where this was merchandised at Marshall Field & Company, Fine Art Department.

The painting itself (image) measures approximately 25 1/4” x 32 1/4” and the overall size including the frame measures approximately 32 7/8” x 37 7/8”. The painting is housed in a mid-century wooden stained and painted frame. There is considerable craquelure in the paint surface, but the painting has been fully restored, cleaned, and varnished by Chicago Fine Art. The craquelure is still visible as this does penetrate into the paint layer, but gives the painting character and clearly shows the age of the piece. This item includes FREE Shipping in the US.
