August Vischer, Oil on Canvas Painting, Soldier's Arrest, 1865

$1,395.00

An oil on canvas painting by German artist, August Vischer (1821-1898), depicting a soldier's arrest. The soldier stands in the center of the artwork before a table with linen tablecloth, with one hand on the table, and the other hand within an armored gauntlet holding it outward. On the floor is a pen and inkwell with spilled ink, and a letter is falling to the floor. Behind the soldier there appears to be a group of men, one pointing at the soldier, as if accusing him and others with hands clasped in prayer. A nobleman stands behind him at the center. To the left stand soldiers with arms raised to arrest the standing soldier. This scene could be depicting a play or a historic event. The painting is signed in the lower left and dated '65 for 1865. There is a nameplate on the frame, but the title of the painting, likely in German, seems to have been worn off.

From AskArt: August Vischer (born June 30, 1821 in Waldangelloch;  January 8, 1898 in Karlsruhe)
was a German history painter.

Born the son of a Protestant pastor, Vischer attended the Lyceum and Polytechnic in Karlsruhe. Then he was trained as a lithographer. Vischer began his studies on November 4, 1840 in the field of printmaking at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Munich with Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld.

From 1847 to 1849, Vischer studied at the Antwerp Academy of Art and then in the studio of the genre painter Eugene-François de Block. Back in Munich in 1849 he dealt with genre and history painting.

Vischer spent the years 1853 and 1854 in Paris. Grand Duke Friedrich I appointed him court painter to Baden in 1864. In 1870 Vischer was appointed professor for figure drawing at the Technical University of Karlsruhe.
