French School Oil on Canvas of a Musketeer Standard Bearer
French School Oil on Canvas of a Musketeer Standard Bearer
This antique French School oil on canvas painting depicts a musketeer, dressed in a gold tunic, lace collar and red and gold sleeves with maroon breeches, white stockings and a large hat, standing proudly, holding his 17th Century musket and standing adjacent to the standard or flag. Next to him is a stool with a pouring pitcher. He stands in front of a blue plaster wall, with noted areas of paint coming off the wall, revealing the red clay beneath the paint. The painting is unsigned.
The painting measures 8.25” x 6.5” and with the antique frame measures 12.25” x 10.75”. There is a small blemish or abrasion in the canvas to the left of the musketeer’s shoulder, with minor paint loss, although this looks similar to other areas of the painting which were intentionally made to look as if the paint was coming off the wall. Please see closeup photo of both the front and back showing the blemish.
