Large 19th Century English School Oil on Canvas Painting "Cavaliers in a Tavern" by W. M. Hay
A large English, 19th century painting, "Cavaliers in a Tavern", oil on canvas, signed lower right "W.M. Hay" in heavy gilt wood and gesso frame. The painting depicts a 17th century scene of cavaliers in a tavern, two leaning against a wall by an open window engaged in conversation with a sword resting on a bench nearby, a single figure seated at that table, and three figures in a back room drinking from goblets. Plaque on verso reads "Presented to Mr. T.E. Young by the Parishoners of Enderby in recognition of the services he has rendered as choirmaster of the Enderby Adult School Male Prize Choir for the last five years. July 21, 1906. Framed 31.75" x 41.75", unframed 22.75" x 32.5".
Condition: Frame has some small dings and nicks. Canvas appears to have been reduced to fit within frame for presentation in 1906.
