Large Antique German Pottery High Relief Glazed Wall Tile (Framed)
Large Antique German Pottery High Relief Glazed Wall Tile (Framed)
This is a large 19th Century German tile depicting a tavern scene with a man playing a lute to a woman and a group of men in Renaissance style dress and a soldier smoking and drinking. The tile has apparently been removed from a wall and is now framed in a contemporary two part shadowbox frame to hide the sides and back of the unfinished tile.
Dimensions of the tile itself are 23.5" x 17.75" and the dimensions of the frame are 25" x 19" x 3.5". Condition is good overall with crazing as would be expected and rubbing on the glaze on the left side. There is a minor chip to the top of the soldier's helmet, and the man sitting in the forefront appears to be holding a glass or mug, which is broken in the section above his hand, which is not very noticeable. There is also a repaired chip to the outer frame which is completely covered with the wooden picture frame and fillet. The tavern room has archways in low relief behind the figures, and with the high relief design of the people it appears three dimensional.
This is one of the most unusual German stoneware tiles, and very large. The piece weighs 27lb. This would be perfect for a beer stein collector or anyone with German heritage.
