Large Antique Oil on Canvas Painting after Rembrandt van Rijn's "The Night Watch"
This is a large antique oil on canvas painting after Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Night Watch”, which is the common or popular name for the official title “The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch”, which is housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The original painting is of monumental size and was completed by Rembrandt in 1642. It was commonly called “The Night Watch” because it was very dark, but after being cleaned in the 1940’s Century, the painting was not nearly as dark. The painting had been reduced in size to fit a smaller space over the years.
This painting being offered for sale appears to be a 19th century copy, unsigned, and done in a much more folky manner than the original. It is still quite impressive in size. This painting has also been cut down from the original size (like the original) to fit the frame.
The dimensions of the site area are approximately 44 1/2” wide x 34 1/4” high and with the frame approximately 50 1/2” wide and 40 1/4” high. The painting shows craquelure and faint stretcher bar marks. There was a small hole in the canvas that has been professionally repaired and a few paint chips professionally restored along with the antique frame.
