Large Oil on Canvas of King Charles I with Sir Anthony Van Dyck in his studio
A wonderful large oil pointing on canvas depicting King Charles I of England with Sir Anthony Van Dyck in his art studio. Anthony Van Dyck was the Royal Court Painter for King Charles I, having painted many portraits of the king. This well painted image shows great detail of both the artist and the king, perhaps talking about the next portrait. The king holds in his hand a sketch or study for the next portrait. There are several pieces of armour on the ground and what appears to be a large sketch book. On the wall behind them is the image of an oil painting of Peter Paul Ruebens, depicting his self-portrait. Van Dyck was Ruebens' finest pupil. The painting appears to be 19th Century. It is housed in a large and heavy gilt wood and gesso frame.
The image area of the painting measures 24" x 30" and the overall dimensions with the frame are 33" x 38".
Condition: The painting has been professionally cleaned and previously lined to a new canvas as can be seen from the back. The frame has also been repaired and touched up. While the painting was thought to be unsigned previously, after recent professional cleaning, it now appears that there is a signature in the lower right corner, written on what appears to be an open book. The letters are difficult to read, but look like “PROPHEIER”. There is something above also, but not readable.
