Antique Shwarzlot Blown Uranium Glass Vase with Musical Symbols by Fritz Heckert
Antique Shwarzlot Blown Uranium Glass Vase with Musical Symbols by Fritz Heckert
A small but beautiful antique Schwarzlot blown uranium glass vase with musical symbols by Cilesian glass house of Fritz Heckert. This vase was designed by Adolf Heyden about 1887. Schwarzlot translates to “Black Lead” and describes the imagery which is meant to depict on a three dimensional glass item the fine detail of a German woodcut or etching. These particular images were taken from a book by Jost Amman published in 1599 entitled “Kunstbüchlein” or “Little Art Book.” Please see the last photos to see images of the original woodcuts from the book. Between the two images of classical figures with musical instruments there is scrolling foliage with leaves and vines. Below one figure, the word “Musica” and below the other “Ein Fremhd Instrument” The glass used for the vase is uranium glass which gives an iridescent look to the vase in natural light, but when a UV light is shined on it, the glass glows a bright green color because it contains uranium.
This vase measures 7 1/4” high and has a diameter of approximately 5 1/4” at the widest point. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines, but there seem to be a number of tiny nicks or fleabites around the top rim of the vase. This is very minor and is not distracting at all from the images. The pontil on the bottom of the vase is polished.
