An oil on cradeled panel painting by Dutch artist, Abraham van der Hoef (1611/1612-1666) depicting a cavalry skirmish or battle scene between Dutch and Spanish soldiers during the 80 years war. The central figure is mounted on a white horse as the horse is galloping, the Dutch soldier aims his musket at the Spaniard on the ground holding a pike. There are various vignettes throughout the painting of soldiers fighting, others on the ground and one man that seems to have fallen over a barrel. The sky and clouds as well as smoke fills the sky behind the skirmish. There is an old paper attached to the back attributing the work to Dirk Stoop. However, the most current attribution is to Abraham van der Hoef and its perfectly into his oeuvre.
The painting measures 20 1/4” x 29 3/4” and overall with frame measures 26 1/4” x 35 5/8”. The painting is presented in a contemporary Dutch black ripple frame.
