An oil on canvas painting after Flemish artist, Adriaen Brouwer (1605-1638), Tric-Trac Players in a Tavern. The main characters playing a game of backgammon, also known as “Tric-Trac” at the time. A pewter jug rests on a bench. Behind the group is a pair of men warming themselves by a fireplace. The original work by Brouwer resides in Museum der Bildenden Künste, Leipzig. This painting is quite old, but exact age is uncertain. The Dutch style ripple frame appears to be original to the work, and may be a 17th Century frame. The ripple molding is quite worn and smooth, and there are old traces of gilt on portions of the molding.
Adriaen Brouwer was considered a true Flemish master of the baroque period, for which only about 60 paintings are known to be by the artist. He died at the age of 33 of plague. His works were in the personal collections of Peter Paul Ruebens and Rembrandt Hermanesz. van Rijn. This painting is an antique copy of Brouwer’s original work.
The painting measures approximately 14” x 16” and overall with the ripple frame approximately 22” x 24 1/4”.
