Anthonie Palamedesz (1601-1673), Oil on Panel - Guard Room Interior with Soldiers and Dog
An oil on panel painting depicitng an interior guard room scene with soldiers and a dog. The central figure in the painting, an officer in uniform stands in command, looking at the soldiers on his left and pointing to what appears to be some broken sticks on the floor to his right. He seems to be accusing the solders of cluttering his floor with broken sticks, as the the dog next to him is likely the real culprit. The soldier is wearing his gorget and reaching for his cuirass. On the far right, a red standard and drum. There is a rapier sword on the floor. In the background are many other soldiers in the midst of every day activity. On the left are 3 soldiers sitting around a small fire and smoking.
The painting is signed by the artist in the lower left. It is presented in a carved wooden frame. Provenance: Most likely Lord Claud Hamilton
A similar composition resides in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, (Inv. A3024) also oil on panel but slightly smaller in size, signed and dated 1647. The one in the museum has a blue standard and the officer wears a blue sache and feather in his cap instead of red. There are slight differences in the characters and background, and there is no dog in that painting. The Rijksmuseum explains that the artist visited Amsterdam and was familiar with Rembrandt’s famous “Night Watch” and believe the central figure’s pose and stance is similar to the figure in the Night Watch and was inspired by Rembrandt’s work.
The painting and frame are in excellent condition and ready to hang, a true museum piece. The dimensions of the panel are 19.13” x 24.49” and overall with the frame approximately 27 1/2” x 33”.
