An oil on panel painting attributed to someone within the circle of Esaias van de Velde the Elder (1587-1630), depicting a Merry Company in a Garden. This scene is a typical early 17th Century Dutch painting by van de Velde. In this scene a musician playing a lute is leaning against a garden wall while an elegantly dressed couple sit enjoying the music. Other the other side of the well appointed table sit other elegantly dressed couples eating and drinking. There are large pokals and other drinking vessels on the tiered table. A wine cooler sits on the ground along with a large plate of fruit. A small white dog stands nearby in a playful stance. On the right of the painting is a distant scene with other couples walking their dogs. The panel is comprised of three horizontal sections and has inset sections to stabilize the panel. There is a panel maker’s mark on the back of the panel with what appears to be two crossed weapons impressed in the wood. The painting is unsigned, or the signature has been lost to previous cleaning. The painting itself and the panel maker’s mark is currently under review by Ellis Dullaart of the RKD (Dutch Institute for Art Research) awaiting results.

The painting is in very good condition but the horizontal panel joins are visible from the front of the painting. There are various old in-paintings, but not visible to the naked eye. The painting measures 30 1/4” x 42 1/2” and overall with the gilt Dutch ripple style frame measures 41” x 53 1/2”. The painting is beautiful in its current condition and ready to hang as can be seen in the last photo.
