Attributed to Klaes Molenaer, Large Oil on Canvas, Dutch Town Winter Scene

$7,500.00

A large oil on canvas painting, attributed to Klaes Molenaer (1630-1686), depicting a Dutch town with large buildings, snow townfolk, horses, and ice skaters amidst a blue and cloudy sky. Klaes Molenaer was the younger brother of Jan Miense Molenaer, another famous Dutch artist known for interior tavern scenes. Klaes specialized mainly in winter scenes with buildings and skaters on ice as well as townfolk involved in everyday outside activities in the snow. His paintings have a mythical winter feeling to them and are quite special.

This painting has what appears to be the remnants of a signature on the wall, lower center. Under UV light, that area glows green with old varnish, which means that the previous conservator did not clean that section, as to not chance removing any of the signature. However, it is unreadable. The canvas is lined and there is considerable craquelure throughout the enter painting, as well as areas of in-painting and retouching. There is an old puncture upper left quadrant that is stable, but visible in the work and an old patch that has been in-painted at some point in the painting’s history. The stretcher appears to be original from the 17th Century. The frame is a Dutch style ripple frame and appears to be 19th Century. The painting can be described as “fair” condition for it’s age. It has many age-related issues and old conservation work, but still presents on a grand scale with its size as an impressive work, though much of the detail is lost in the craquelure.

The painting measures 34 3/16” x 44 1/16” and overall with frame measures approximately 41 7/8” x 51 1/2”.
