Attributed to Pieter van Bloemen, Oil on Canvas, Landscape with Castle and Riders
An oil painting on canvas, attributed to artist Pieter van Bloemen (1657-1720), called “Standard” depicting a landscape with castle and riders. The castle or large building has a circular turret, which is seen in some of the artist’s other paintings. There is a stone archway and steps to the lower section where the horses and riders are. In the lower left corner there is a man with a gun hunting ducks. There is a signature, lower center, which is difficult to see, but which has been enhanced (last photo) to show the signature. The artist often signed his works with “PVB” or “PV Bloemen” or PVB and a date. The portion after the B is not legible, so may be his last name or a date, possibly. The nameplate also attributes to the artist.
There is some over-cleaning from an old campaign of restoration, which is primarily evident in the sky, where the reddish-brown bole is coming through the paint layer slightly. The painting measures 27 1/2” x 38” and the overall painting with the frame measures 34 5/8” x 45 1/8”. The frame appears to be from the early 20th Century and is in good condition, presenting the painting very nicely for display.
