Barent Gael, Oil on Canvas, Halt of Cavaliers
Barent Gael, Oil on Canvas, Halt of Cavaliers
An oil on canvas painting by Dutch artist, Barent Gael (c.1630-1698) depicting the Halt of Cavaliers. Gael was the pupil of the famous “Horse Painter of the Golden Age”, Philips Wouwerman. This painting is quite typical of Gael’s paintings, showing tremendous detail in the both the landscape and the figures. The trees and leaves are painted in such detail, as are the horses and cavaliers in the camp. Each stone of the cottage and the pieces of thatch of the roof can be seen individually. Two of Barent Gael’s paintings adorn the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam, and on last visit, I felt this work is better than the two in the museum as a representation of the artist’s work.
The painting was originally attributed to Pieter Wouwerman, and named as such on the brass plaque affixed to the frame, but the painting has been clearly named to Barent Gael by the Netherlandish Institute for Art Research (RKD) and comes with a report on the painting from Ellis Dullaart at the RKD naming the painting to Gael.
The painting measures approximately 19” x 24 1/2” and overall with the gilt frame measures 24 3/4” x 30 1/8”. The painting is in very good condition with some minor varnish loss near the edges of the frame and minor chips on the frame itself. The painting is beautiful and ready to hang.
