Circle of Philips Wouwerman, Oil on Panel, Landscape with Travelers
An fine 17th Century oil on panel painting depicting travelers within a landscape by an artist within the Circle of Philips Wouwerman (1619-1668). This composition seems to be related to a painting by the artist which appears in Birgit Schumacher’s book, Philips Wouwerman, Horse Painter of the Golden Age, depicted as #320, Catalog A349 from a private collection. The horse and rider appear to be exactly the same as is the attendant, women and children, but there is one additional child in this painting and the dog is in a different position. The landscape itself is entirely different than in the painting by Wouwerman. Dr. Schumacher provided input about this painting and stated that it is a very well executed contemporary copy (that is contemporary to the other painting, but still 17th Century).
The painting measures 18 1/4” x 22 1/4” and is presented in an antique Dutch style ripple frame with overall dimensions of 27” x 30 1/2”. The painting and frame are in excellent condition with a bright colors and a glossy varnish. Ready to hang.
