Jacob Feyt de Vries, Large Oil on Panel, "The Battle of the Downs"
A Dutch battle scene oil on panel, probably depicting the Battle of the Downs, which took place in 1639 between the Dutch and Spanish fleets in the Dutch battle for independence. The painting at one time was named to Abraham de Verwer, but has been identified by research experts at The Dutch Institute for Art Research (RKD) as by Jacob Feyt de Vries. The painting shows both fleets, with one ship in the center of the painting on fire and sinking with many men in the water.
The painting measures approximately 24” x 49” and overall with the gilt frame measures 35” x 58”. There is a horizontal crack which was professionally restored approximately 1/3 fo the way down from the top of the panel. There is considerable in-painting in the sky and some thinning and losses to various areas of the rigging and ships over the years. Nevertheless the painting presents well for a large 17th Century naval battle scene work, and is quite impressive. The painting was recently conserved by Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago.
The painting comes with a report from the Nerthlands Institute for Art Research (RKD) identifying the painting as by Jacob Feyt de Vries and is documented in the RKD database as by the artist. See link: https://rkd.nl/images/309660
