Jan Jacobsz van der Stoffe, Oil on Panel, Cavalry Skirmish Battle Scene in a Rocky Landscape

$19,500.00

An oil on panel painting by Dutch artist, Jan Jacobsz. van der Stoffe (1611-1682), depicting a cavalry skirmish battle scene with riders on horseback confronting ground troops within a rocky landscape.

About the artist: Jan Jacobsz van der Stoffe was born and died in Leiden (1610-1682) where he became a master in the Leiden Guild of St. Luke in 1644. In 1668, he became Chairman and, by 1669, Dean of the Guild.

Van der Stoffe specialized in painting hunting and battle scenes. A considerable market for military paintings emerged during the seventeenth century, partly in response to the on-going Eighty Years War.

Three of Van der Stoffe's cavalry paintings are still in Leiden, Museum De Lakenhal. An oil on panel depicting huntsmen in a landscape is held by the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (WA1897.5).

The painting measures 21 3/8” x 29 1/4” and overall with gilt frame measures 27 5/8” x 35 1/8”. The panel is uncradled, flat and stable. A join in the panel is visible across the centre of the composition, but this appears to be stable and is supported by a wooden baton embedded within the panel's reverse. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear, but slightly uneven. No losses to the paint surface are visible. A handful of retouchings can be noted with the naked eye: these are concentrated primarily along the aforementioned join in the panel, to fill in old losses, in the black trousers of the figure second from the left, in the clothing of the figure on the far right of the main group, and in the background. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms much of the above, while also revealing further retouchings within the central figure group, in the clothing of the men lying on the ground and in that of the man just right of centre on the brown horse. The largest of these measures approximately 2 x 5 cm. Overall, the painting is in good condition. It presents well and is ready to hang.
