Attributed to Jan Dirksz. Both, Oil on Panel, Travelers in an Italianate Landscape
An oil on panel painting that has been attributed to Dutch artist, Jan Dirksz. Both (1615/18-1652) featuring travelers in an Italianate landscape. Both is famous for his depictions of golden light and how that light falls on the trees and land providing a glow to his images. This painting was in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum (WAM) of Worcester, Massachusetts but was deaccessioned at some time in the 20th Century. It then was owned by the Odon Wagner Gallery in Ontario, Canada and was sold to a private individual in 1999 for C$27,600. The back of the painting has labels from the gallery and the accession number from the museum on both the stretcher and the frame. Included is the receipt for the painting from 1999 and an appraisal at that time of $33,000.
The painting has been featured in the following literature: Worcester Art Museum Annual, 1941, Vol. IV, Worcester, MA, "The Bulletin," 1943, Vol. VII;
Louisa Dressler, "European Paintings in the Collection of Worcester Art Museum," 1974, Vol. I, signed "Both" lower left (included with the painting).
The painting may or may not be by the attributed artist, but may be by someone in the Circle of the artist or a follower, but is clearly a 17th Century work.
The dimensions of the painting are 21 3/4” x 27 1/2” and overall with the frame are 32” x 37”. Both painting and frame are in excellent condition, ready to hang.
