Manner of Giovani Paolo Panini (1691-1765) Large Capriccio Scene 17th Century

$3,500.00

Oil on Canvas painting, a wonderful large Capriccio Scene depicting the Roman architectural ruins with shepherds and a man playing an instrument with a dog nearby and other people performing everyday tasks. This painting is unsigned and appears to be 17th Century. It has been lined on burlap. and is presented in a magnificent carved wood veneered and gilt frame. There were some losses, and one chip near the top right center, which has been professionally cleaned and restored in a gallery recently. The veneered wood frame had some losses and peeling of some of the veneer, and has also been professionally repaired by the gallery to glue down any peeling veneer, but there are some losses, which are not distracting. The painting has significant craquelure and the image is still somewhat dark as would be expected for a painting of this age.

Dimensions of the sight area are approximately 34" x 27" and the dimensions of the outer frame are approximately 40 1/2" x 33 3/4".

Written on verso of frame "Giovanni 1691-1768". The painting is unsigned, and does not appear to actually be by Giovanni Paolo Panini, but in that style, and appears of the correct age, 18th century.
