Simon de Vos, Oil on Panel Painting "The Prodigal Son"

$28,000.00

Simon de Vos (1603-1676) Oil on Panel painting depicting The Prodigal Son squandering his inheritance. The story of the Prodigal Son is a parable told by Jesus in the book of Luke about a wealthy landowner and his two sons. The younger son asks for his full inheritance and then leaves his family and squanders his wealth on luxuries including elaborate feasts and brothels. In this painting the artist depicts the son with his arm around a woman playing a lute, hoisting a goblet of fine wine amidst a sumptuous feast. Playing cards are scattered on the floor. On the right side of the painting a man reaches for a bottle of wine from the wine cooler with a look directly at the viewer conveying a message of his amazement at the man squandering his wealth. On the left side of the painting is an image that may be a foreshadowing of future events showing a man leaving a brothel being chased by a woman swinging a broom at him as he doesn’t have the money to pay for her services.

The panel measures 20.08” x 28.74” and is presented in an antique gilt frame with overall dimensions of approximately 29” x 38”. There is a horizontal crack at the panel join that has been previously repaired and can be seen mainly in the man on the right, but is not overall distracting to the image. The painting is clean and bright and ready to hang.
