Simon Johannes van Douw, Oil on Panel Painting, "At the Farrier's"
An oil on panel painting by Dutch artist Simon Johannes van Douw (1630-1677) depicting riders and horses “At the Farrier’s”. The group of people are outside of the building, with one man smoking a pipe on his horse, while the other man helps to hold the other horse’s back leg up for the farrier to hammer the shoe on the horse. A dog stands in the foreground watching the activity. In the distance are other riders and horses. The painting is signed S V Douw just below the image of the dog, and the artist’s name is on the frame plaque.
The painting measures 14 5/8” x 19 5/16” and overall with frame measures 20 1/2” x 25”. The painting was professionally cleaned and conserved at Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration in Chicago, IL and has a glossy varnish. The frame has also had some breaks and repairs but looks good and is in ready to hang condition.
