18th Century Figural Carved Italian Shrine Cabinet with hidden drawers
18th Century Figural Carved Italian Shrine Cabinet with hidden drawers
This is likely the most unusual and unique piece of furniture in our inventory. This dates to the 18th Century, Italian, and was part of the Guccione estate. The cabinet has a single small drawer at the top, above an arched gallery flanked by hanging carved figures of a man and woman. Inside the gallery area is a carved panel with what appears to be Roman soldiers with swords and a bearded man sitting in a rounded chair (possibly St. Paul) with another man standing behind (possibly the Centurion guard). There is also a death's head mask carved at the top, as well as armored knights on either side of the open gallery. Four hidden drawers with ram's head knobs flank either side of the carving on the inside of the gallery or shrine area. The bottom of the cabinet has two cabinet doors on gothic style hinges, one carved with a man and a small child, and the other carved with a woman. The base of the cabinet has a single large drawer. The most unusual adornment is the carved sea turtle feet, possibly a nod to Paul's shipwreck off the coast of Malta. The finish is a very dark reddish brown, almost ebony finish. There are minor nicks and chips as would be expected based on the age of this piece. There are minor losses to the carving. The bottom left foot shows slight separation, and there appears to be an old glued repair to the foot. Dimensions 68" H x 38" W x 15" D (not counting protruding turtle feet).
