19th Century Oil on Canvas Painting "The Appeal" after Meissonier
A 19th Century antique oil on canvas painting in beautiful gilt frame entitled “The Appeal” bearing both a nameplate and a signature of Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier. The painting appears to be a copy after Meissonier and not an original by the artist himself. It depicts a genre scene with a family including a man, woman and small child, appealing to a seated military commander or tribunal. Behind the seated commander appears to be a table with several seated gentlemen and a standing young boy. This painting is very old and is in good condition having been conserved professionally and varnished, and includes the letter from the conservator on the back of the painting.
The painting measures 17 1/4” x 13” and the overall frame measures 25” x 21”.
