Antique Mettlach 4.2L German Beer Stein by Villeroy and Boch "Die Kannenburg" Dated 1898, 20 1/4" Tall
Designed by Heinrich Schlitt and signed is this large and imposing German beer stein from 1898 by Villeroy and Boch, made in Mettlach, this stein stands 20.25” tall to the top of the pewter thumb lift and has a capacity of 4.2L. The stein is Mettlach #2524 and is one of the all time greats for stein collectors. The title on the front of the stein is “Die Kannenburg” which translates literally to “Can Castle”. Cylindrical drinking vessels were called Kanne. The word stein is an American term, which means “Stone” in German as many, including this one are made from stoneware. This is a truly beautiful specimen and features knight in armor, drinking from his tankard, with the word “Prosit”, which means Cheers. There is also a jester on the stein and several other knights on horseback. The stein seems to represent the castle where the knight would come together to drink. There is actually a castle in the Netherlands called Cannenburgh, but it is not known if that was the inspiration for this particular stein.
While most Kannenburg steins have the pagoda style pewter lid, this particular version is a special order pewter lid which is original to the stein and features a coat of arms on the top. The stein is in excellent condition and has no chips, cracks, hairlines or pewter damage. It bares the Villeroy and Boch stamp on the bottom and the date code for the year 1898.
