Antique 6L German Pewter Brewer's Guild Tankard Inscribed and dated 1776

$1,495.00

An outstanding and very rare massive 6L German pewter brewer’s guild tankard inscribed and dated 1776. This is an original guild tankard from 1776, not a later Historismus reproduction piece.

The central image depicts a man and woman with brewer and cooper’s implements.

The inscriptions on the stein in German and the English translation is below:

Der Comune Brauhaus der Brauer u. Böttcher zu Bärenstein und Stahlberg ward solche kanne verehrt der Burschenschaft 1776.

Translated: The communal brew house of the fraternity of brewers and coopers of Bärenstein and Stahlberg is glorified with this jug 1776.

Braumeister Jacob Schäfer; Siedememeister Michael Römmele; Küfermeister Anton Dör; Lademeister R. Staiger; Brauer D. Losser; Frumbold Sebastian Steinbach

Translated: Brewmaster Jacob Schaefer; Siedeme Master (unknown profession) Michael Roemmele; Master Cooper Anton Doer; Loading Master R. Staiger; Brewer D. Losser; Frumbold (unknown profession) Sebastian Steinbach

The lid of the stein has the image of a large coin with inscription around a man’s bust. The inscription reads “Georg Ludwig Duke Breilunsri Elector”

Information on this person “On the appointment of George Louis, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg (Hanover) in the Holy Roman Empire, as Commander-in-chief of the Imperial Army of the Upper Rhine, after the death of the previous Commander-in-chief, Ludwig von Baden. He would later become George I of Great Britain.”

The tankard measures 18.25” to the top of the pewter thumb lift and has a base diameter of 8”.

This is truly a one of a kind piece, and over 240 years old. There are small dings and dents that would be expected with age and use, and a few tiny holes in the sides of the tankard at the point of the cross-hatching on the lower circular band.
