Bronze Sculpture of Mercury after Giovanni da Bologna
Bronze Sculpture of Mercury after Giovanni da Bologna
This gorgeous bronze sculpture depicts the god, Mercury, with his winged helmet and winged feet, poised on the breath of the North wind, propelling him upward, and holding a caduceus (symbol of the healing arts) in his left hand, with his right arm lifted into the air, after the original by Giovanni da Balogna in Florence, Italy. This is a late 19th or early 20th Century bronze casting, 34" high and with significant weight, 26.5lb. It previously belonged to a former Illinois governor. The caduceus is slightly loose, and the base has a slight dent to the edge, which is not noticeable at all unless holding the piece upside down (see last photo). There are minor scratches to the finish, but nothing serious, a truly beautiful bronze. A similar ;piece is displayed in the historical home of Frederick Douglas, which he purchased for himself.
