This oil on canvas painting by American artist, Daniel Huntington (1816-1906) depicts a Cromwellian soldier from the English Civil War Period. Followers of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector were devout individuals and strongly believed in their cause. They opposed King Charles and his Cavaliers in the English Civil Wars. Here Huntington paints his soldier seated in deep concentration, reading a book wearing his armored breastplate while holding his rapier sword in his right hand. His plumed hat sits on the floor to his left. The artist signature and date of 1860 appear just below the soldier’s hat.

Huntington was an American artist, a native of New York, and studied at Yale. He enrolled at the National Academy School and became its president, serving the longest of anyone in that position. He painted many famous Americans including Abraham Lincoln. His high auction record was in 2016 at Doyle New York, where one of his paintings sold for $406,000.

The painting image measures 9.63” x 7.63” and with the overall frame measures 16” x 14”. The frame has the nameplate with title and artist name. The painting is somewhat dark and there is craquelure, which would be expected from age. The frame exhibits some separation in the upper left and lower right corners, but is in overall good and displayable condition.
