After Ernest Meissonier, 19th Century Oil on Mahogany Panel, "The Card Players"

$995.00

This is a wonderful small 19th Century oil painting on chamfered mahogany panel after Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) depicting a group of baroque Dutch gentleman playing cards. Two of the men hold cards, while each man seems to have a confidant providing advice and looking on. The painting is in wonderful detail and has been professionally cleaned and varnished. The card player on the left sits at the table, holding cards in his left hand. His pipe laying on the adjacent table. His wide-brimmed hat slightly shades his face. His friend stands next to him, wearing an armor breast plate and smoking a long pipe. The card player the right appears to be deep in thought, looking at his cards and trying to figure out how to play his hand. His confidant or friend, looking closely at his hand. The man’s sword at his side. The original work is housed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This painting is unsigned on the front. There is some old writing verso, which may be a signature or other writing (see photos). The painting is housed in a contemporary (to the painting) high quality gold-leaf frame, that complements the painting perfectly.

The mahogany panel measures 9 1/4” x 12 5/8”, and the overall size of the frame measures approximately 15 3/8” x 18 1/4”.

The painting is in excellent condition, and has just undergone cleaning and varnishing. There is some slight in-painting around the edges that had some previous frame-rubbing, but now looks great.
