Early 20th Century Figural Carved Spanish Bookcase
This is one of our favorite pieces, coming from Barcelona, Spain, this early 20th Century Figural Carved Spanish Bookcase features extensive carving showing faces and mythological characters as well as some type of religious scene in he center section. The scene shows what appears to be a jail with bars on the arched windows, a guard in armor on the left and possibly a prisoner on the floor. On the right of the image is another guard in armor, possibly holding a scroll and a man seated in a Renaissance style savonarola chair, and holding a cross forward, possibly to convert or to condemn the prisoner. Faces of men flank the left and right centers of the door panels with a grotesque image of the green man above. The top section center shows another man's face, wearing a helmet with wings, flanked by carvings of winged mythological creatures with goat legs. There are also grapes, a floral motif and various foliate carving to this fantastic piece. The center panel drops down to reveal a writing desk and each of the doors opens to reveal wooden shelves. Each door and the drop-down panel all have their original keys and locks. There is a small gallery above the drop-down panel to display small items, such as we have displayed with a seven-color jade vase (not included). The entire cabinet rises on large lion-paw feet. The cabinet is in very good condition for its age with minor wear and losses to some carving. The top of the cabinet is unfinished, as was the style for that period, and shows signs of slight warpage, but is tall enough as to not be seen by most people.
