Edgar Bundy, Oil on Canvas Painting of a Cavalier in an Interior
Edgar Bundy (1862-1922) was one of the preeminent English School artists during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. He was known for painting historical genre scene paintings as well as cavaliers and other historical subjects in a traditional interior setting. This painting depicts a cavalier, a follower of King Charles I, with goatee beard, similar to the King’s own facial hair, and with his large, wide-brimmed hat, ruffled collar, rich clothing and holding his sword, seated in a rich interior with paintings on the wall, a marble sculpture and bouquet of flowers on a table and a guitar behind him leaning against the wall.
Bundy was quite prolific and has has an auction history of over 200 paintings sold over the last 20+ years, with a record high of $27,510 in 2014.
The painting is unlined and in very good original condition, and is bright and clean. The frame has had damage and repairs with re-painting on the bottom. There is slight separation at the corners, typical of age and use, but does not detract from the piece, as the focus is on the painting itself.
The site area of the painting measures approximately 13 1/8” x 17 5/8” and the overall size including the frame measures approximately 21 5/8” x 25 5/8”.
