Franz von Defregger, Oil on Panel Painting, German Dancing Scene - 1882
Franz von Defregger, Oil on Panel Painting, German Dancing Scene - 1882
An oil on panel painting by Austrian/German artist, Franz von Defregger (1835-1921) depicting a German dancing scene. This painting depicts the arrival guests coming in from a doorway on the left and being greeted, while a man in Lederhosen and feathered cap dances. Other couples are seated nearby, and a dog lies on the floor in the front of the painting watching the lively dance. The painting has many small details such as a bird cage hanging from the ceiling, and a pair of portraits hanging above the group. The painting is signed in the lower right corner and dated 1882. The artist’s paintings generally sell well in the auction market with the record for one of his works in December 2021 for $235,540 (€208,000) at Neumeister Auction in Germany. This would be a great item for any German enthusiast or German beer stein collector, as many German steins feature scenes from Defregger’s paintings.
This is a small painting to have so much detail, and measures only 7 3/8” x 10 3/8” and overall with the gilt frame, measures approximately 12 1/4” x 15”. The frame is also fitting for the painting with Edelweiss flowers painting in each of the frame’s corners. There are a few small scuffs to the varnish, a chip to the paint and the very top, left of center, likely from frame rubbing. There is a small dark area to the right side about 2” from the frame, which is in the background and not too noticeable. This may be old in-filling from a prior restoration. There is slight frame separation on the upper left and lower right corners, but the painting is in generally good condition and ready to hang.
