Frederik Christian Lund, Oil on Panel Painting - "Swiss Guard"
An oil on panel painting by Danish artist, Frederik Christian Lund (1826-1901), depicting a member of the Swiss Guard. The Swiss Guard is the service that serves the Vatican in Rome and are the personal guards for the Pope. The guardsman stands reading a letter or proclamation, his uniform depicted in beautiful colors of red, black and gold. The paper he is reading seems to be so translucent that one can almost see the lettering through the page. Over the guardsman’s right shoulder is a bookshelf and over his left a window, through which can be seen a painting hanging on a wall in the adjacent room. The painting is signed F. C. Lund and dated 1877.
The painting measures 17 3/4” x 14 1/4” and overall with frame measures 20 1/2” x 17”. There are a few areas of frame rubbing, most predominantly on the left side of the painting and some small losses to the frame, but still presents very well overall. Ready to hang.
