Gilt Bronze and Glass Beer Stein Tankard with Goat Finial
Gilt Bronze and Glass Beer Stein Tankard with Goat Finial
This is an extremely elaborate large gilt bronze and glass beer stein or tankard with a figural finial of the front half body of a goat and with a satyr form figural handle. Th thumb lift is in the shape of the face of a lion. The stein has a bronze footed base with green glass protruding through various openings in the bronze in bulbous projections of both the body and lid of the stein.
The stein measures 16” tall to the top of the bronze finial. There are no chips, cracks or damage to the bronze, but the gilding is worn in places as would be expected from age and use. This stein or tankard is likely Bohemian and would date toward the end of the 19th Century, circa 1880. A similar tankard was sold at Leslie Hindman Auction on June 7, 2018 for $693 (with auction premium), however that example measured 15” tall and had a large chip on the top rim of the stein.
