Gothic Revival Carved and Pierced Door Cabinet with Knight Motif
Gothic Revival Carved and Pierced Door Cabinet with Knight Motif
This is a beautiful and unusual Gothic Revival Carved and Pierced Door Cabinet with Cathedral arch shape and central medallion over a single drawer. There is a night with shield on the left, center and right of the doors. The cabinet retains its original key. The back of the cabinet also opens, although the purpose of this is not known.
A letter inside the cabinet from a woman in Woodstock, IL to someone in Martha’s Vineyard mentions the “Wine cabinet” and the fact that the wood has cracked due to the age. While I have been collecting Gothic Revival cabinets and furniture, this is the only piece I have seen with the shape and with pierced doors. This is estimated to be late 19th Century.
The cabinet measures 70” tall x 36” wide x 19 1/4” deep. It is in good condition considering the age, but shows age cracks on top and across front, scratches, small chips, minor discoloration, and wear.
