Gustave Barrier, Oil on Panel of Standard Bearer

Oil painting on wooden panel by French artist, Gustave Barrier (1877-1953) depicting a proud French soldier of the 17th Century standing proud, bearing the standard or flag. Our cavalier is dressed in a purple doublet with green trousers, gold cape and ruff or millstone collar. He has green bows at the base of his stockings and also on his shoes. The standard is red with gold design and golden fringe. He is depicted in a paneled interior. The paintings housed in a gilt frame with some losses and overpainting. The artist signature is in the bottom right corner as “G Barrier”.

The painting image measures 17 1/2” x 14 1/4” and the overall size including the frame measures approximately 27” x 23”. The panel itself is in very good condition with no signs of cracking or warping. There is some slight frame rubbing on the left side of the painting. The frame appears to be made in two parts and is fastened together on the back. There is a loss to the lower left corner of the relief decoration as can be seen in the second to last photo. The artist is listed in a number of art database with multiple sales results, with the high price at auction being $4,525. This painting is new to market, and not recorded in any of the results.
