Large Antique Majolica Wilhelm Schiller and Son Gryphyon Handle Vase
Large Antique Majolica Wilhelm Schiller and Son Gryphyon Handle Vase
A beautiful large antique majolica gryphon handle vase by Wilhelm Schiller and Son, measuring an impressive 18 1/4" tall and with a 12" diameter across the body of the vase, and weighing 10 pounds! The vase is painted in colors of green, brown, red, and gold and shows great detail, especially in the handles with the gryphon's (or dragon's) red tongue. The maker's mark of WS&S is on the bottom with the mold number 2291. Wilhelm Schiller began production of porcelain and earthenware in Bodenbach, Bohemia in 1829, operating under the name of Schiller and Gerbing. In 1885, the firm was dissolved and renamed Wilhelm Schiller and Son and remained in operation until the onset of World War I. One of the handles appears to have been broken and repaired (see last photo). This is really almost unnoticeable unless looked at very closely. It does not detract from the piece at all, especially of this large size.
