Large Antique Oil Painting on Canvas of Nicholas Lanier, Master of the King's Music, after Sir Anthony Van Dyck
This is a large antique oil painting on canvas "Portrait of Nicholas Lanier" after Sir Anthony Van Dyck. Van Dyke was the royal court painter of King Charles I of England and Nicholas Lanier held the title "Master of the King's Music". This is a classic antique copy of the original painting which resides in the collection of the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna, Austria, and the only copy that I have ever seen of this painting.
Lanier is depicted with mustache and goatee, in a half-length standing pose, leaning against a wall, next to an open window with landscape beyond, and with his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword. The painting is unsigned, but can clearly be seen with the craquelure and age to likely be late 19th Century. The painting is skillfully created and faithful to the original.
The painting is in excellent condition with some light dirt or grime and minor craquelure, but with no chipping or paint loss. The site dimensions of the painting are 39 1/4" x 27 1/4" and housed in a large 4" wide gilt frame bringing the overall dimensions to 47 1/4" x 35 1/4".
