Manner of Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920), Musketeer Playing Lute with Sword 1884
Manner of Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920), Musketeer Playing Lute with Sword 1884
Oil painting on wooden panel of a musketeer or cavalier playing a lute and smiling at the viewer. The musketeer in his wide-brimmed hat with feather is facing the viewer and smiling as he is turned to the viewer’s left holding his lute with his left hand on the the the neck of the instrument. His sword hilt is visible hanging from his side. He is dressed in a gold doublet with red sleeves and a white collar. The painting is signed “F Roybet” and dated 1884 in the top left corner. There is also a gallery plaque affixed to the frame identifying the artist as Ferdinand Roybet 1840-1920.
Roybet paints in loose brushstrokes in an impressionist style reminiscent of Frans Hals. This particular painting, while signed “F Roybet” is not clearly by the artist, and may be an honorific work, and not painted by Roybet himself, therefore the description as “manner of” the artist.. This is still clearly an antique painting on wooden panel, and also bears an old gallery tag verso from Galerie Neupert Zuerich, also identifying the artist (see last photo).
The painting is in overall good condition with minor scratching and paint loss. The frame is also in good condition and may have some old repairs, but is quite presentable and ready to hang in its current condition. The site area of the painting measures 24 1/2” x 18 1/2” and the overall size including the frame measures 33” x 27 1/4”. The painting was purchased in a London auction several years ago, sold as by Ferdinand Roybet.
