Oil on Canvas by Alfred Jacomin, French Tavern Scene with Cavaliers
A highly entertaining and well-painted oil on canvas tavern scene with cavaliers by French artist Alfred Louis Vigny Jacomin (1843-1913), this painting shows in quite good detail the scene of four gentlemen in cavalier style dress of the 17th Century seated around a drum with a bottle of wine, telling stories and clearly entertaining each other. The talent of the artist comes through in the manner in which he depicted the camaraderie of these men and the jovial look of these four friends. They are in a cellar, as the stairs can be seen to the left as well as the rafters in the ceiling. The man seated on the left with the red breaches seems to have his long hair hanging over a portion of his face, allowing the viewer to just glimpse his eye, nose and chin. he grasps a wine glass in his left hand. The standing man in green with the rose colored sash, lace collar and gray hat, stands listening to the conversation, his hand casually draped on the chair of his comrade. The man in the center of the scene sits smiling, holding his glass in his right hand and his rapier sword cab be seen strapped around his body, resting between his legs, his high boot visible next to the drum. The man on the right is an older man, with gray hair and beard, and he seems to be the one telling the story and enthralling the others with his tales. He wears green breeches, a rose colored tunic with white collar and sash, and has a great hat. His word is strapped to his side and his gray boots have a red velvety looking liner. There is a large wooden cabinet behind the gentlemen and what appears to be a clock or unlit lantern on the wall.
The painting is in excellent condition, unlined, and with no apparent repairs or damage. It is presented in a gold leaf pierced wood and gesso frame. The site dimensions are approximately 21” x 25 1/2” and the overall dimensions including the frame are approximately 30 1/4’ x 34 3/4”. There is some very slight paint loss near the top of the painting from abrasion from the frame, but this is barely noticeable. The frame is also in good condition and appears to have an old repair at the top center, but not visible from the front of the picture.
