Oil on Canvas "Chess Players" by Alexander Austen
Oil on Canvas "Chess Players" by Alexander Austen
A charming painting by English artist, Alexander Austen, active between 1891-1909, oil on canvas, the painting depicts a pair of chess players in 17th Century cavalier style clothing. The man on the left with blonde hair seems deep in thought, contemplating his next move, while the man on the right, with his hands clasped seems to elude confidence in his strategy. The pair sit before a fireplace and nearby is a table with pitcher and a glass and pipe. The other man’s pipe rests on the table. A mandolin hangs on the wall adjacent to the chimney of the fireplace.
The painting site area measures 12” x 16” and the framed dimensions are approximately 17.5” x 22”. There was an old repair on the canvas, which was coming loose, and has been newly repaired, painting cleaned and varnished. It is now in beautiful condition and ready to hang.
