Oil on Canvas, Procession and Coronation of William IV at Westminster Abbey, by George Scharf the Elder 1833
Oil on Canvas, Procession and Coronation of William IV at Westminster Abbey, by George Scharf the Elder 1833
A tremendous epic depiction of the Procession and Coronation of William IV of England at Westminster Abbey by German artist, George Scharf the Elder, signed and dated 1833. The procession took place in 1831 and was depicted by famed English artist, George Cattermole as a watercolor painting. This is an oil on canvas after the original by George Cattermole, but due to the depth and bright colors of the oil paint, is even more dramatic than Cattermole’s original work. In the center we see the golden carriage that carried the King and Queen surrounded by their retinue of royal guards and the large number of citizens observing and cheering the procession. The gothic architecture of Westminster Abbey is depicted beautifully as is the large crowd.
The painting is in very good condition and has been lined to another canvas. The image size measures approximately 28 1/2” x 38 3/4” and overall with the frame measures 35” x 45”.
