Oil on Panel, The Cavalier's Report by John Sanderson-Wells
A lovely oil on panel painting by English artist John Sanderson-Wells (1872-1955) entitled “The Cavalier’s Report” shows an English cavalier (follower of King Charles), arriving and apparently having provided a report to a pair of seated gentlemen, possibly asking questions about the content. The proud cavalier dressed in red with a white lace collar holds his hat in his right hand and with a red cape thrown over his harm. He has a leather pouch on his left hip held with a large leather strap and metal buckle in the center of his chest. The gothic interior shows arched doorways and a large halberd standing in the corner. The two gentleman are seated next to a fireplace in period English furniture and going through a large number of documents. There are a few papers on the floor in the corner, and the artist’s signature is just below the papers in the lower right corner.
John Sanderson-Wells is a listed artist with an extensive sales record, although he seems to be known for painting hunting scenes with hounds and a variety of other works. His auction high record for a painting was $61,060 in 2011.
The panting is in wonderful condition with no signs of damage whatsoever. The frame is also quite beautiful and bears the nameplate of the artist.
The image sight area measures 11 1/2” x 8 3/8” and the overall dimensions including the frame measure 17 1/8” x 14”.
