Oil Painting on Canvas - Still Life with Fruit and Covered Vessels by John Friedlinger
An oil painting on canvas by Hungarian artist John (Jeno) Friedlinger (1890-?), depicting a still life with fruit and covered vessels. This painting depicts a table scene with white tablecloth, a silver fruit bowl overflowing with white and red grapes, pears and apples. Adjacent is a tall pouring stein or ewer, and in front, a small gold cup with cover sitting next to it. A tall silver pokal is on the right with a bluish pot festooned with laurel leaf decorations. All is in front of a window with mauve curtains and a sheer, through which can be seen a stem of pink flowers and a butterfly in flight. Friedlinger uses an impressionistic technique that somehow makes each piece of fruit, vessel, and even the folds in the table cloth seem real, as if you could reach right into the painting for a grape or piece of fruit.
The painting measures approximately 24” x 30.5” and with the frame measures 38” x 32”, and is signed “FriedlingerJ” in the artist’s typical style. The frame is composed of wood and gesso and has a painted weathered look to it.
