Pair of Antique Oil Paintings on Canvas by English artist John Bell (1811-1895)
A charming pair of antique oil on canvas paintings by English artist John Bell (1811-1895). The first depicts Peasholme House, a Georgian building built in 1752 near Peasholme Green in York, England. The painting shows great detail with many people in the painting. The second depicts Scarborough Castle, which is a ruins of a medieval royal fortress on a rocky promontory overlooking the North Sea and Scarborough in North Yorkshire England. Both paintings are signed and dated in the lower right hand corner, but difficult to see. The date is also difficult to read but looks like 1873.
Both paintings are housed in matching gilt frames, which are 20th Century. Both have gallery tags on the back of the frame from Wallack Galleries in Ottawa, Ontario. Both exhibit some craquelure and had some chipping paint, which was filled and professionally restored. These are beautiful antique paintings and ready to hang. The site area measures 13 1/2” x 9 5/8” and the overall dimensions including the frame measures 19 1/4” x 15 1/8”.
