An oil on canvas painting, attributed to Scottish artist John Pettie, titled verso “The Conspirators”. This small painting tells a story. A young man in 17th Century costume stands alert before a closed door, his rapier sword drawn as if listening to something coming from behind the door, and his left hand raised, cautioning the older man behind him, also holding a sword. A young woman, perhaps the man’s daughter, kneels before him, apparently pleading with him not to enter the room or become involved.

The painting measures approximately 9 1/2” x 7 3/8” and with frame measures 14 5/8” x 12 3/4”. The painting exhibits some craquelure as would be expected from age, but has been professionally cleaned and varnished in the last few years.
