An oil on panel painting by British artist, John Watson Nicol (1856-1926), entitled “Phyllis is My Only Joy”, depicting a man with a smile on his face reading what is most likely a love letter. The man’s face evokes great character and emotion, while the letter he is reading is nearly translucent allowing the viewer to almost see the writing on the letter.

The painting measures 14” x 10” and overall with the gilt frame measures 19” x 15 1/2”. It is signed by the artist and dated 1880. The painting is in very good condition with no signs of damage or in-painting. The frame has had some minor repair but is in good condition and ready to hang.
