This is an antique Majolica Monumental Palace Urn, mold #8609 by Wilhelm Schiller and Sons in the Bohemian manner of Renaissance style. One side depicts a Roman soldier mounted on a rearing stallion fighting a bull, showing a body behind on the ground. The other side of the urn depicts a child riding an elephant, with a lion close behind and two additional Roman soldiers in helmet and armor, one holding a spear one with a sword, and another soldier behind the elephant. Wilhelm Schiller and Sons operated from 1885-1914 in Bohemia and Bavaria. For more information on majolica and the maker, please see The Majolica International Society webpage on this maker, where an example of this piece is pictured.
The urn measures 23.5" tall to the top and measures 13" wide at the widest point across the handles. There are no chips, cracks or signs of restoration. There is some glaze loss on the brown background color in scattered areas, most noticeable adjacent to the soldier on the rearing stallion.
